Civil War issue. Standard pattern, Peterson #10. 30 1/4" single edged blade with Ames makers name to the ricasso, weakly struck as typical and now obscured. The opposite side with U S / D H /1861.  The initials are for inspector Benjamin Hannis who worked in 1861 only. Blade gray with uniform light pitting. The hilt with good patina and minor bruises. Character as expected for an example which likely served through the entire Civil War.
