FINE VIKING WEDDING RING 10TH-11TH CENT AD, SIZE 9 3/4

$535.00

Gilt bronze, size 9 3/4. Broad, 4.9mm band with raised edges. Central double coil roped motif flanked by single roped or stipple bands. The decoration intricate and complete and ending at a  joint. Made that way so that the intricate relief work could be done flat, then joined to form the ring. While all Viking rings are about 1000 years or older, they vary in condition depending on their burial environment. Rings buried in the ground are generally surface degraded. Rings buried in hoards, usually sealed ceramic jars, can be in near perfect preservation as here. The 24karat gold surface restored for modern wear. Jewelry gift boxed with certificate of authenticity. Vikings exchanged rings on the pommel of the groom’s sword.
