Edo Period bowl and cover. 4 7/8" diameter, gilt edge with tomato red interiors. Both with turned raw wood exteriors stained only, with application of thick lacquer build up prunus foliage with buds set with sheet gold. The lower lid including a gnarled tree trunk with a hollow inlaid with mother of pearl and a flying crane. Wonderful juxtaposition of the drab coloration and precious inlay evoking the feeling of a jewel glowing in the dark. Excellent for the period.
