18th century, bronze, octagonal section 2 ¼” width 1 ½” height. Undecorated in the South Indian taste. The interior caked with lime from the betel nut chewing activity which comprises chewing a betel leaf wrapped combination of nut slices and slaked lime and spices. The result is a mild stimulant and red stained teeth. The practice is widespread throughout Indian and Indonesia.
