ROMAN FIGURAL GLASS BEAD, 1ST-2ND CENTURY AD

$70.00
Rare and curious example about 10.7mm length and diameter (0.43”). Dark red glass, lamp work with the parting compound preserved in the stringing hole. Mold pressed while still plastic, in three ranks: Triple bars parallel to the hole, a rounded square with globular pendant centered, and an elongated bulbous leaf shape. The surface with partial gold leaf, evidently as applied as the edges are discrete, not worn. This and A9570 are two of a group of 18, until now, preserved together. All are made and gilt in the same manner. The significance of the motif is unknown, but possibly identifiable in the future information explosion of the internet.
