10th-14th centuries. Iron, 2 3/4" length. Angled body with square eye for a slender handle. Held in the left hand by the far end of the handle and manipulated over the sculptor while being repeatedly tapped with a hammer in the right hand. One of the tools used to create the great sculptures which adorned the medieval cathedrals and palaces.
