12” length, wood carved as a lizard or possibly skink with horned head and thick tail. Carved details, including the back panel and painted overall in earth based pigments exactly as used on the iconic bark paintings and dating it in probability to the early 20 century. The side with a small screw eye, most likely indicating it was attached to a string and used in the presentation of orally preserved epic tales. See also our A8691 for a related figure.
