Used to clear brush and fashion blinds from which American troops fired on the British, fascine knives were officially issued during the Revolution. See Collector’s Illustrated Encyclopedia of the America Revolution, Neumann, p.118. This example is a variation new to us. It is 10 3/8” length forged with a hook form head with butted seam conical socket pierced for a securing pin. The back has an integral forward curved lug or finger, evidently intended for use as a gun rest. While Revolutionary riflemen were sharp shooters no doubt, shooting from a blind might cause interference from branches, particularly in windy conditions. A rest would steady the gun against any such interference. It would have been mounted on a wood haft of about 4 foot length.
