Anglo Zulu War period. 3” X 9” trade beads on native hand spun woven plant fiber. White and black borders with field of polychrome triangles on green. Trade button fasteners to connect to a necklace. Original collection tag with brown inked “Native name for Dr Muchie” and “Native child froth dress”. These were given to young girls as betrothal gifts, bonding them to later marriage. Muchie is a Scottish name, likely a missionary serving at the time of the war and worth research. Brought back to England by a Welsh soldier who fought in the conflict.
