VIKING PROTECTIVE BROOCH, C.850-1050 AD

$215.00
Bronze with gold surface. Worn in numbers on the surface of the jerkin, to provide a measure of protection against sword cuts and, in fact, were a form of armor. See current Public Television programming for documentation of these in action. As protectors, they also held spiritual significance for the warrior. Circular, about 7/8” diameter with the center off set resulting in a larger side for the pin rest. The surface is modeled in a roped motif about ¾ of its diameter. Only such example we have seen. The surface lightly textured and worn from burial. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold overlay restored, on a gilt Sterling silver 18” neck chain for contemporary wear. Jewelry gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity. Fine proud form.
Item ID: B4112
