RARE AMERICAN PLANTATION CANE, EARLY 19TH CENTURY

Probably South Carolina Low Country. 35” length. Finely grained teak, tapered through its length. While beautifully finished and polished, it was not machine (lathe) turned, but hand fashioned, surely by a slave. Plantation canes originated in the West Indies (Caribbean) in the 18th century and were popular on American plantations through the early 19th. They were carried by male and female plantation owners and were used variously pointing, prodding and beating slaves. Purchased in Abbeville, South Carolina in 1867.
