Sometimes known as the club knife, specifically used for the capture of slaves for the human consumption (cannibalism) market. 15 5/8” total length. Iron blade of cleaver form, finely forge with medial ridge, bordered edges and stipple crescent decoration each side. Wood grip with brass trade tape wrap. Edges worn, the balance with fine deep patina. Blade quite crisp with dark patina. Driven by demand, slavers provided live flesh for the pot for which there was considerable market or workers for Arab households. This weapon served in the confined quarters where captives were subdued and gathered. It is designed to subdue, disable or kill the victim while preserving the marketable carcass.
