CONGOLESE SLAVER’S SPEAR, C.1880

$110.00

Ex: Baptist Missionary Society Collection. Forged iron, 14 1/8” in length. Leaf-shaped blade with some original forging scale to the middle. Tool marked edge sharpening very visible. Open seam conical socket with tool finish. Uniform dark patina. Brought back from the Congo by missionaries who circulated the collection in England to raise funds for the missions on Mission Sunday. That practice was stopped in the 1930s and the collection stored until it was sold at auction by Christie's at their South Kensington (London) saleroom in the 1980s. We purchased the entire collection.
