Mahdist period, C.1880s. 37 3/4” broad unfullered blade. Cruciform guard with banded tip diamond section quillons and ridged flared langets. Leather wrapped grip and disk form pommel. Sound, complete and undamaged with gray patina to the blade and spotty color to the guard. Type produced for the Anglo-Sudanese War of 1885 when the Mad Mahdi rose against the British to purge Sudan of non-Muslims. Among the largest of these we have seen.
