ROMAN SORCERER’S PENDANT

$220.00

First century, the time of Christ. 3/4” (0.74”) height, Deep relief modeled as a bird with its wings at its sides. Almost certainly a sorcerer’s amulet worn by augurs, the seers of Roman pagan religion, who foretold the future by interpreting the flight of birds in an area described by his staff, the lituus. The interpretation was much like the later practice of reading tea leaves. The form of the wings replicates the shape of the lituus reinforcing the connection with the augur or priest. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold surface restored, on a modern sterling silver neck chain, for modern wear. Gift boxed with certification of authenticity.
