BYZANTINE RELIQUARY CROSS, 5TH-8TH CENTURY AD

$440.00

The fall of Rome followed the adoption of Christianity and the eastern portion of the Roman Empire carried on as the Byzantine Empire with its capital in Constantinople. Christian Pilgrims would journey from Europe to the Holy Land stopping at sacred sites, such as saint’s burials, along the way. Some wore reliquary crosses such as this which were hollow backed to house holy relics like the hair of a saint or splinter of the true cross. This is an especially good example, over 11/2” (1.54”) high with a figure of Christ with hands raised in the orans posture. The rendition is typical of Dark Ages iconography as found on church walls and in stone. The back is hollowed for the inclusion of a holy relic such as the hair of a saint or splinter of the true cross. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold overlay restored, on an 18” modern gilt silver neck chain for contemporary wear. Jewelry gift boxed with a certification of authenticity.
