VERY RARE IBO (IGBO) SPEAR HEAD, 19TH CENTURY

$350.00
Southern Nigeria, 19th century. Finely forged, 14 3/8” length with medially ridged barbed point and open seam conical socket with transverse rounded band. Rectangular section bolster with remnants of red pigment, probably sealing wax.  Above, a triple scroll section segments forming a cage. That feature distinguishes these unique spears. See FNS7574 above. See Johansson, Nigerian Currencies, p.13 where he states that "they are used by the chiefs of the Nasubi and Edo tribes for payment; extremely rare." This example is the only one we have seen made for mounting to a wood haft.
