Second half of the 19th century. From the Baptist Missionary Society Collection. 20 3/4" length, the hilt in two stages for two hand use. The base flared, medial swell encased in sheet copper with copper tape between. The terminal of sheet copper, the base embossed to balance the tape wrap. Elongated heart form blade with thickened medial stepped to the beveled edge. Fine old patina. The hilt complete and undamaged. Used both with one hand and two and useful for close in fighting in the kraal or hut as well as on the battlefield. During this period, tribal wars were specifically for the capture of slaves and not territorial.
