Zulu Wars of 1879 and representing the assegai in its acme form. 48 1/4” length with large stone finished medially ridged leaf-shaped point on a cylindrical bolster with dimpled transition. Fine woven split cane socket and wood haft expanding to the butt. Under Shaka, the assegai was transformed from a marginally effective throwing spear to a thrusting weapon for hand-to-hand combat. The old spearheads were reforged, two together to form the new cut and thrust points. It is said that they were quenched in human fat. Hafts were redesigned for one-hand control as the other held the shield. The attack was to engage the enemy by hooking the shield behind his, pulling it aside, and administering the death thrust. This example is of the ultimate form as it evolved and was used in the last Zulu battles. The spear was also used to dispatch wounded enemies who fought bravely. Others were killed with the club.
