19th century. See Stone fig. 739 #9. 30 1/2" length for fighting within the kral and hut. Tool finished leaf shaped iron head and iron base piece. The shaft wrapped alternate segments of morocco leather with split cane woven bands and hide with remnants of hair. Head with stable brown patina. The haft wrap complete and undamaged but for the loss of hair. Its age attested to by the shrinkage of the hide which continues today and the gradation of the patina on wood revealed. The Ashanti were both slavers and slave traders, instrumental in the Transatlantic slave trade.
