EGYPTIAN CARVED CEDAR GOOSE 716-32 BC

Late period, 716-32 BC. Large example, 5 1/2" length. Depicted with its wings together at the back Carved wood with brown body color and black beak. A burial item from the "larder" of a privileged, perhaps noble tomb. Waterfowl were an important food source for Egyptians, particularly in the Nile delta. The raised wings represent the position of a goose or duck in the market with its wings intertwined or bound. They were carried to slaughter in that way as well. A well-stocked tomb would have stores of foodstuffs ready for preparation including such fowl. Good large example.
