Buff terra cotta with traces of pigment. The face with hooked nose, “coffee bean” eyes and earspools. Elaborate coiffeur indicating noble heritage and twisted necklace. The body of with pregnant or postpartum characteristics. Just over 3” (3.02”) height. Michoacan, Western Mexico. Little is known of the Chupícuaro. They migrated from San Luis Potosi between 800 and 500BC settling north of modern Mexico City. The sites, known only since 1926 include over a dozen pyramids, tombs, altars and other structures, the vast majority of which are, to date, unexplored. Chupicuaro art such as this figure, is popularized in part by the anticipation of archaeological exploration which will bring a broader understanding of their culture.  On Plexiglas display mount with certificate of authenticity.
