Fine example of iron, just 5 1/8 " length, in tow stages. Broad bit with concave sides and tapered back spike. That form known primarily from Greek painter pottery. The sagaris is the first horseman's axe, credited with facilitating mounted warfare. They are specifically associated with the Amazons, the woman warriors of Greek history, recorded by Herodotus (484-425 BC). The sagaris is further distinguished by being among the very earliest of iron weapons. A lynchpin for antique arms collections. Professionally conserved excavated condition.
