Second half of the 19th century. 19 ½” length with asymmetrical leaf shaped finely forged with concentric shallow fullers. Finely carved off-set wood grip with medial ridge, set with studs to enhance purchase. The Pende of Mali, the location of the legendary trading center Timbuktu, were predated upon by the Lunda and Chokwe slavers. These weapons were used in defense during slave raids.  From the Baptist Missionary Society Collection which was circulated among churches in England to raise funds for the Missions. Tag not included.
