Seventh Crusade period (1248-1254). 3 1/8" length, very finely forged. The large barbed point, the tip with thickened medial, and each barb of the slightly convex section with thickened back opposite the cutting edge. Tapered bolster and finely forged seam socket. Crisp profile and so well preserved that it will stand on its base. Darkened from burial, the original surface is substantially intact and with minimal scattered oxidation. Exceptional quality and condition for the period. See Arms and Armor of the Crusading Era, Nicolle fig. 89 for a comparable example excavated at Ras Castle, Serbia, and dated 1230-40. While javelin heads are well represented among surviving weapons of the Crusades, quite little is published about their use in battle...
