Avar, Migration Period. The Avars, like the Vikings, were an alliance of European groups of mixed cultures, amalgamated by the migrations responding to the fall of the Roman Empire and the political void which followed. Because of their mix, experts disagree on their cultural evolution. In the late 6th century, they contracted with Constantinople, seat of the Byzantine Empire, to subjugate the barbarians in the lower Danube/Bleck Sea area.  3 1/8 (3.19”) length with diamond section, mail piercing point. See European Arrowheads and Crossbow Bolts, Rau, p.99 for a near identical example. Stable excavated condition.
