A GERMAN OR SWISS HALBERD, C.1570

$4,150.00

This halberd dates to the period in which fully armored mounted troops supported by infantry engaged their similarly defended adversaries. The halberd in the hands of a foot soldier gave him the capability of defeating an armored horseman when the opportunity arose in battle. The upper portion of the arm which operated in the striking zone of the horseman, is protected from cutting by iron straps on all four sides and could withstand the attack of a horseman armed with sword, axe or mace. The halberd remained a popular weapon for royal and noble guard units for more than a century after this weapon was used. 108 3/4" overall length.
