VIKING SORCERESS’S AMULET. 9TH-11TH CENTURY AD. 2 1/8" height

$180.00
White metal (tin, lead, zinc?) shaped as a well-delineated duck's foot with three toes and raised detail to the top. The top pierced for suspension. A burial at Viden, Denmark contained the body of a woman of wealth and status buried with henbane seeds, which have hallucinogenic properties, and a wand as well as other objects. From these, it was concluded that she was a seeress or sorceress. The grave contained a necklace hung with three duck feet pendants very similar to this. This example is well cast but the edges have not been trimmed suggesting that it, too, was made for burial. As found condition with glossy gray patina
