SUPURB BYZANTINE CROSS, 5TH-8TH CENTURY AD

The fall of Rome followed the adoption of Christianity and the eastern portion of the Roman Empire carried on as the Byzantine Empire with its capital in Constantinople. Christian Pilgrims would journey from Europe to the Holy Land stopping at sacred sites, such as saint’s burials, along the way. This is an especially good example, about 1 5/8" (1.62”) high plus the loop with a figure of Christ with hands raised in the orans posture.  The left hand holding a fish. The sun. moon and a cross above his head. The rendition is typical of Dark Ages iconography as found on church walls and in stone. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold overlay restored, on a modern 18” gilt sterling silver neck chain for contemporary wear. Jewelry gift boxed with a certification of authenticity.
