See The American Sword, Peterson #121 for this standard pattern carried in the Civil War. This example dates to the Westward expansion period of the 1870’s. Brass hilt with eagle pommel and guard. Folding side guard with the sprung pivot ball functional as rarely found. Floral motif knuckle bow. Wire wrapped ray skin grip. 28” double edged diamond section plated blade, decorated half its length with foliage, U S, and military motifs. The forte with retailer’s name J H WILSON MAKER PHILA, established about 1870. Brass mounted scabbard surface soiled only and undented. The plating dulled and should be polished. Good clean untouched example with remnants of gold showing on the hilt. From the famous Frank Barnyak collection.
