AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR SHORT SABER C.1775-83

$2,150.00

Classic example of a short sword made provincially for the American Revolution. 25 3/8” curved wedge section blade with narrow back fuller, impressed with the English running fox mark each side. These blades, along with German blades were imported to the colonies for local hilting. Brass hilt with stirrup form guard. Circular pommel and matching base ferrule. Wood grip with wire wrap, long gone. See Sword and Blades of the American Revolution, Neumann, #172.S-195.S for related examples. Note that of that group, each shows distinctive features, some shared but no two swords can be said to be similar. This example is yet another variation, with commonality of elements and style, but with a distinct character of its own. Swords like this as well as pikes were produced in numbers as for the first two years of the war, the majority of American fighters lacked firearms.
