The sword carried by union Lieutenants and captains in battle during the Civil War. Brass hilt with loop side guard pierced with foliage and flowers, shows good medium patina. Wire wrapped leather covered grip (complete, wire tight). 30 ¼” broad curved blade, double fullered and decorated 2/3 its length with US, scrolling foliage, E PLURIBUS UNUM, flags and military trophies. Blade gray with good clear decoration and uniform light oxidation. This pattern evolved with the specific goal of producing a substantial fighting sword, which it is.
