RENAISSANCE ITALIAN LADY’S PENDANT C.1500-1650

Silvered bronze just over 7/8” width of scalloped edge circular form with circular piercings. While the Church was well established and even a significant military power by this time, the pendant obviously evokes the Roman Pagan goddess Fortuna in the spoked wheel of fortune. The circles probably refer to Venice and identify it as North Italian. The survival of Pagan beliefs is evidenced throughout Renaissance art and culture and survives today in the form of superstitions and “good luck charms” which in fact are amulets. Surface textured from burial, but not a funerary object. Professionally refurbished with the silver surface restored on an 18” sterling silver neck chain for modern wear.
