Standard pattern with brass hilt generally following the 1840 army NCO sword but with the left guard smaller, cast in  down turned configuration and line bordered.  The grip and pommel made in two pieces with brazed seam. The guard and knuckle bow also made in two pieces with brazed seam.  29” straight broad fullered blade, decorated first half with foliage, oak leaves, fouled anchor and maker’s name W H HORSTMANN & SONS PHILADELPHIA. That form of address used after 1843. The ricasso struck with the king’s head mark over C. Blade crisp and excellent with lightly mottled smooth surface. Just a little oxidation at the tip.  Civil War period with the etched decoration as found on the more common Infantry officer’s swords. Marines served ashore and afloat in the Civil War. Although most service was with the Navy, a battalion fought at Bull Run and other units saw action with the blockading squadrons and at Cape Hatteras, New Orleans, Charleston, and Fort Fisher.
