RARE SINHALESE PIHA KAETTA IN ITS MYSTICAL STORAGE BOX.

$825.00
10” length with thick wedge section blade. The forte encased in fine deep relief chiseled bronze cheekpieces. The double fullers with engraved silver overlay and surmounting deep relief chiseled decoration to the blade overlaid in silver. Shaped horn hilt with silver tang bands, side mounts, and pommel encasement. The silver complete but for two tiny side mounts to the grip. In its velvet-lined wood box. The top with relief foliage. Rarely encountered, these knives are virtually always in very aged condition. The only dating information available places them in the 16th century. This example is well preserved for the period, considering the intricacy of its construction. The box which exudes a great mystical character is probably about 100 years old. The Sinhalese occupy much of Sri Lanka, previously known as Ceylon, and are Buddhists.
