RARE ROMAN LEGIONARY’S SWORD BELT TERMINAL, 2ND-3RD CENTURY AD

$115.00

Gilt bronze. Just over 1 3/8” (1.39”) length. Shield shaped with extended terminal. The surface is incised in foliate motifs, inlaid with gold, mostly surviving. At the time, legionary’s sword belts had split ends with two terminals. See Forum Ancient Coins, for plainer examples and a very specific scholarly discussion of these. Only gilt example we have encountered and surely belonging to a high ranking officer.
