4” length of truncated conical form with thickened edges, perhaps for fighting. Opened seam flanked by characteristic coil work decoration. Matching solid decoration opposite Shows great age and patina typical for early Benin bronze, much of which was captured during the British Punitive Expedition of 1897. 1200 British troops captured, burned and looted Benin City, bringing to an end the west African Kingdom of Benin. Much of the country's art, including the Benin Bronzes, was looted and taken to Britain. This example was purchased at auction in London in the 1980s along with a rare Benin short sword now registered with the Museum of Mankind, London.
