Probably Batak, dating to the colonial period under the Dutch East India Company. 30 ¼” length with 24 ¾” narrow back fullered European hanger blade struck with a maker’s mark and crudely chiseled with 1783 date. Iron hilt. The guard of European military influence with distinct Hindu details including the parrot head knuckle bow terminal. Pommel of tulwar form. Bone grip. Untouched, with stable crusty oxidation to the hilt. The blade mostly smooth brown with scattered patches pitting. Purchased at Christies, London, about 1980. We have never seen another of this form.
