LATE VIKING/SCANDINAVIAN HEART PENDANT NECKLACE, 1050-1200 AD

The period of conversion to Christianity for Vikings. Gilt bronze, over 5/8” (0.69”) height, comprised of two circles and a diamond arranged to form a heart. Particularly dep section with the back hollow as with pilgrim crosses which are made to contain a holy relic. Interesting blend of earlier elements, both Viking pagan and Christian. Such “transitional” symbols were common and persist even today in the form of superstitions and belief in the occult. The Viking form is preserved in simple geometry and the relic cavity is probably symbolic only. Slightly under 5/8” height plus the suspension loop. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold surface restored on an 18” gilt sterling silver neck chain for modern wear. Gift boxed with certificate of authenticity.
