INDONESIAN SHORTSWORD

$445.00
Early 20th century and unique in our experience. European styling, like a German pioneer's side arm, with 14” spear point blade of thick wedge section. Recurved iron guard and two piece horn grip secured with three rivets. Leather scabbard well decorated with geometric tooling. The throat with a catch to engage the guard. The blade base inscribed TOQRMRMCO / MBE C23. The reverse, chokhay.16. The inscriptions directly correlate with short swords, often inscribed TJIKEROH. These swords replicate German hunting swords with reverse brass cross guards with small shell guard and brass pommels on bone grips. These last are often described as European hunting swords, but are Indonesian, said to be made for the Dutch East India Company. The present sword is unquestionably of the same origin, though the only example copied from a German military sword to our knowledge. Rare if not unique.
