HEART FORM VIKING PROTECTIVE BROOCH 850-1050 AD

$435.00

Gilt bronze, worn in numbers on the surface of the jerkin, provided a measure of protection against sword cuts and was a form of armor. See current Public Television programming for documentation of these in action. As protectors, they also held spiritual significance for the warrior. This example is just under 1 ¼” (1.23”) height. It is in the form of a heart, incorporating one of the most popular Viking icons. For Vikings, the heart stood for bravery, fortitude, loyalty, integrity, attributes of the warrior. It is abundantly referenced in Viking literature. The surface is textured and from burial. Professionally refurbished with the 24karat gold overlay restored, on an 18” gilt Sterling silver neck chain for contemporary wear. Jewelry gift boxed with a certificate of authenticity. Only example of this we have seen.
