Mid-18th century, type which served in the French & Indian War as well as the Revolution. See European Cut and Thrust Weapons (Mueller) #357 and Swords and Blades of the American Revolution, Neumann #63.S. Brass D guard hilt with leather covered grip and 24 ¼” wedge section blade. Grenadiers, by this time, were elite troops of superior size and skill who led with hand to hand combat, as with breeching a fortification. The relatively short blade is a reflection of the close circumstances in which this sword was used.
