Benjamin Hoadly (1676–1761), Bishop of Winchester, was a prominent English clergyman, theologian, and polemicist. He is best known for sparking the Bangorian Controversy which held that the church lacked divine authority to enforce doctrine or discipline, as Christ’s kingdom was not worldly. Another example of this print is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, #17.3.756.2357. Plate impression 11 ¾” x 17”. Custom double matted to 19” x23” for framing.
