CURIOUS EARLY KNIGHT’S TEMPLAR SWORD

$615.00

Pre 1881 and probably about 1870 when Civil War veterans sought the security of the secret societies. Plated hilt with chain guard and early feature, tang bands. Black japanned scale grips with cross logo. 28 ¼” double edge blade of heavy fighting proportions, decorated with the owner’s name on side and Worcester Co Commandry the other. The ricasso with GAYLORD Mfg Co CHICAGO MASS inscription.  The Gaylord Company of Chicopee produced arms and accoutrements through the Civil War and was purchased by the Ames Co. in 1881. The Chicago markings on this example evidently come from an idle minded worker who simply lost track of what he was doing! Leathe scabbard with brass mounts of typical Civil War construction with formerly plated hand engraved mounts. Early example from the famous Frank Barkyak Collection. Frank Barnyak was a professional gun show promoter which gave him unparalleled access to the market. He was known for his ability to ferret out rarities such as this.
